Fishing Gear We Actually Trust
Little Bear’s never met a lake, river, or creek he didn’t want to try. This page is our running list of fishing gear worth your money — tested favorites and reliable budget alternatives, so you’re not stuck guessing between a hundred options that all claim to be “the best.”
Rods & Reels
Premium pick: Shimano Shimano’s reels are smooth, durable, and built to handle years of regular use without the drag system giving out on you mid-fight. If you fish often enough that gear failure actually costs you fish, this is where to invest.
Budget pick: Ugly Stik Ugly Stik earned its reputation the honest way — these rods are nearly impossible to break and cost a fraction of premium brands. Not fancy, but they flat-out work, especially for casual or occasional trips.
Tackle Storage
Premium pick: Plano Plano’s tackle boxes and bags are the standard for a reason — smart compartment layouts, durable latches, and organization systems that actually make sense once you’re standing in a boat trying to find one specific lure.
Budget pick: Flambeau A reliable, no-frills alternative that covers the basics of tackle organization without the premium price tag.
Waders & Apparel
Premium pick: Simms If you’re wading in cold water regularly, Simms waders are what separates a good day from a miserable one. Genuinely built to last through repeated hard use.
Budget pick: Frogg Toggs A solid entry point for anyone who wades occasionally and doesn’t need premium-grade durability yet.
Big-Box / General Fishing Supplies
For everything else — line, hooks, coolers, and general tackle — Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s remain the most trusted one-stop options, especially if you’re still figuring out exactly what setup works for you.
